The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

April 1

Daily Thought from the Saints

"If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask him simply to fill you with charity, the greatest of all virtues; with it you can accomplish what you desire."

— St. Vincent Ferrer

Daily Scripture Verse

"Gladden the soul of thy servant, for to thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, O Lord, art good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on thee. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; hearken to my cry of supplication. In the day of my trouble I call on thee, for thou dost answer me."

Psalm 86:4-7

Daily Meditation

"The soul that does not attach itself solely to the will of God will find neither satisfaction nor sanctification in any other means, however excellent by which it may attempt to gain them. If that which God Himself chooses for you does not content you, from whom do you expect to obtain what you desire? ...It is only just, therefore, that the soul that is dissatisfied with the divine action for each present moment should be punished by being unable to find happiness in anything else."

—Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade

Daily Catholic Wisdom

When we truly welcome Jesus as Lord of our lives, we experience a great mystery. It’s the mystery of self-giving.

—Edward Sri
from his book “Into His Likeness”

Daily Journey with the Pope

"We must never forget the moment and the way in which God enters into our lives, treasuring in our hearts and minds that encounter with Grace that enkindles faith in our hearts and sparks zeal for the Gospel within us. We need to be cleansed of all the dust that has sullied our hearts. How? Prayer, fasting, works of mercy: this is the journey of Lent."

Pope Francis

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. John Conley, C.S.C.

Father, your beloved Son Jesus was anointed in the Spirit and brought your healing love to our world. We pray that Christ, the light of the world, will sustain us always in faith, hope, and love. Amen.

Abbot Austin Murphy, O.S.B., St. Procopius Abbey, Lisle, IL

Jeremiah 31:7

Reading

Thus says the LORD: Shout with joy for Jacob, exult at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say: The LORD has delivered his people, the remnant of Israel.

Meditation

God exhorts His people to proclaim their praise. This is not the praise of themselves but their praise of God for delivering them. God wants us to praise Him for His saving works. This is not a selfish desire on God’s part, for He gains nothing from our praise. He wants us to praise Him for our own benefit. When we praise and thank God, we enter more deeply into the wonder of His being and are enriched by doing so.

Prayer

May Your numerous gifts to me lead me to praise You. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
