St. Marina of Omura

November 11

Saint Marina of Omura was a devout Catholic laywoman who lived during a time of intense persecution of Christians in Japan. Born in Omura, Nagasaki, Japan, she embraced her faith from a young age and grew in her devotion to God. Marina's upbringing was heavily influenced by the Catholic community in Omura, which was known for its commitment to the faith. She was deeply inspired by the Dominican missionaries who preached in the region and sought to emulate their dedication to God. Although not officially a member of the Dominican Order, Marina became a lay tertiary, fully embracing the charism and spirituality of the Dominicans. During the reign of Tokugawa Yemitsu, a period marked by strict anti-Christian policies, Marina faced tremendous challenges to her faith. The government was determined to eradicate Christianity from Japan, leading to the persecution and execution of numerous faithful Catholics. Marina, however, remained steadfast in her beliefs and continued to practice her faith in secret. Despite the risks, Marina actively participated in clandestine Catholic gatherings, where she found strength and encouragement among fellow believers. In these secret meetings, the faithful would gather to pray, celebrate the Mass, and receive the sacraments in hiding. Tragically, Marina's devotion and commitment to her faith eventually led to her martyrdom. On November 11, 1634, Marina was discovered by authorities and apprehended for her Catholic practices. Refusing to renounce her faith, she was cruelly burned alive in Nagasaki, Japan. Marina's unwavering faith and courage in the face of extreme persecution are a testament to her deep love for God and her dedication to the Catholic Church. In recognition of her bravery and sacrifice, Marina was venerated as a martyr on October 11, 1980, by Pope John Paul II, who decreed her martyrdom. On February 18, 1981, she was beatified by the same pope, and finally, on October 18, 1987, Marina was canonized by Pope John Paul II, officially becoming a saint in the Catholic Church. Although information about specific areas of patronage associated with Saint Marina of Omura is not readily available, she holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics, especially those in Japan, as a shining example of fidelity to Christ in the face of persecution. Her courageous witness serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live out their faith in challenging times.
