Sts. Alodia and Nunilo of Huesca

October 22

Saint Alodia of Huesca, also known as Alodia of Spain, was born in Huesca, Spain, to a Muslim father and a Christian mother. She was one of two sisters, the other being Saint Nunilo of Huesca. Both Alodia and Nunilo were raised in the Christian faith by their mother. Tragedy struck their family when their father passed away. Soon after, their mother married another Muslim man who began persecuting the girls due to their Christian beliefs. This persecution intensified during the reign of Abdur Rahman II, a Muslim ruler of Spain. Alodia and Nunilo endured imprisonment and suffering at the hands of their stepfather. Despite the hardships they faced, these two sisters remained steadfast in their faith, refusing to renounce their Christian beliefs. The courage and devotion they displayed during their ordeal made them shining examples of faithfulness and piety. Eventually, their stepfather, in an attempt to eradicate their Christian faith, turned the sisters over to die as martyrs. In the year 851, Alodia and Nunilo were beheaded in Huesca, Spain, for their refusal to renounce Christianity. They willingly gave up their lives rather than betray their beliefs. Saint Alodia of Huesca is venerated as a martyr and was canonized before the process of formal canonization began. Her feast day is celebrated on the 22nd of October. As a symbol of her martyrdom and devotion to her faith, Alodia's representation is not specifically mentioned in the available records. However, her life serves as an inspiration and encouragement for others who face similar challenges in their commitment to Christianity. Saint Alodia is honored as the patron saint of various causes, including child abuse victims, martyrs, people ridiculed for their piety, runaways, and unmarried lay-women. Her intercession is sought by those seeking comfort, strength, and protection in these areas. Saint Alodia of Huesca, with her unwavering faith and steadfastness even in the face of persecution, stands as a shining example of dedication to Christ. Her courageous life serves as an inspiration for all believers, reminding us to remain faithful to our beliefs, even in the most challenging circumstances.
