A Lenten Word - Certain
Homily for Saturday of the Third Week in Lent
Once again, the word of God comes to us through the prophet Hosea. The word that I would suggest as the one that would keep us mindful during our Lenten journey is “certain.” Hosea speaks these words.
“As certain as the dawn is his coming, and his judgment shines forth like the light of day! He will come to us like the rain, like spring rain that waters the earth."
The old joke goes that nothing in this life is certain except death and taxes. However, for those who are people of faith, we can be certain of many things. First and foremost, we are certain about God’s love for us. We are also certain that God is full of mercy and faithful kindness.
Nature has taught us about certainty. Spring will follow winter, dawn will follow night, a day of sunshine will follow a cloudy day.
Because we are certain of God’s love, mercy, and faithful kindness, we are also certain that we are destined to spend eternity with God if we grasp our faith firmly. The Scriptures have taught us these lessons just as surely as nature has taught us.
As we go through our day, let us revisit those things which are certainties in our lives.
