We Recall What and Who God Is
Homily for Tuesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
No great theological insights are necessary to understand today’s readings. They simply remind us in what kind of God we have placed our hope and faith.
The prophet Micah tells us:
God is our Shepherd who shows wonderful signs, removes our guilt, pardons our sin, and does not persist in anger. God delights in clemency, has compassion, treads underfoot our guilt, and casts our sins into the depths of the sea. God shows faithfulness and shows grace.
Psalm 85 reminds us:
God has favored us, brought back the captives, and forgiven the guilt of his people. God has covered all our sins, withdrawn all of wrath, and revoked all burning anger.
St. Matthew reveals that Jesus accepted us into his family: “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
We learn nothing new today. We simply recall all that God has done and has been for us.
