The Great Cloud of Witnesses

July 24

St. Sharbel Makhloof

O God, who didst call the Priest Saint Sharbel Makhluf to the solitary combat of the desert and imbued him with all manner of devotion: grant us, we pray thee; that, being made imitators of the Lord’s Passion, we may merit to be coheirs of his kingdom; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Daily Thought from the Saints

"Announcing the Gospel is the first and greatest act of charity."

— St. Arnold Janssen

Daily Scripture Verse

"What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct."

Matthew: 16:26-27

Daily Meditation

"We have to accustom ourselves to pray in all places and at all times. The real place to pray in is the soul, for God dwells there. If we wish to obey our Lord’s counsel, when we pray we should enter the chamber of our soul, close the door, and speak to the Father, whose loving eyes seek ever our own. This inner chamber of our soul is the true temple, the sacred sanctuary, and we carry it with us and can at any time either remain there or quickly return to it, should we have been obliged to leave it."

— Dom Augustin Guillerand

Daily Catholic Wisdom

The grace of confession also allows us to encounter our fellowmen more magnanimously. A person who has experienced grace himself will sooner grant it to his neighbor.

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Bob Loughery, C.S.C.

Almighty God, every day you reveal to us your presence and the depth of your love for us. Open our hearts to receive your mercy, our minds to understand your wisdom. Make us worthy vessels of your grace. Help us bring your love to a broken world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
