Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces

May 8

While the Universal Church celebrates the Feast of Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces on November 8, the Franciscan Friars celebrate this feast on May 8. The friary which houses the General Curia of the Order of Friars Minor is named for Mary under this title.

The term “Mediatrix” refers to Mary’s unique role in the economy of grace. Here are some key points:

  1. Cooperation in Acquiring All Graces: Mary’s cooperation in acquiring all graces on Calvary is essential. She suffered alongside her Son, Jesus, during His crucifixion, and through her obedience, faith, hope, and burning love, she played a significant role in restoring supernatural life to souls. As a result, she is our Mother in the order of grace.
  2. Continual Intercession and Mediation: Even after being assumed into heaven, Mary continues her saving function. Through her manifold intercession, she tirelessly works to obtain the gifts of eternal salvation for us. She cares for her spiritual children who are still on their pilgrimage, facing dangers and difficulties, until they reach their heavenly destination.
  3. Invocation Titles: In the Church, Mary is invoked under various titles related to her role as Mediatrix, including Advocate, Auxiliatrix, Adiutrix, and Mediatrix. These titles recognize her powerful intercession and her ongoing mission to bring grace to humanity.
  4. Distinct from Christ: It’s essential to understand that Mary’s role as Mediatrix does not diminish the dignity and efficacy of Christ, who remains the one true Mediator between God and humanity. No creature can be placed on the same level as the Incarnate Word and Redeemer.

In summary, Mary’s cooperation in acquiring grace and her ongoing intercession make her the Mediatrix of all graces. While she plays a unique role, it always points back to Christ, who is the ultimate source of grace and redemption.
