January 31
Saint Cyrus The Physician, also known as Cyrus of Alexandria, Cyrus of Canopus, Abba Cyrus, Abbacyrus, Abukir, Ciro, Cher the Physician, or Father Cyrus, was a renowned figure in the early Christian community. He was a physician by profession and was widely respected for his skills and knowledge in Alexandria, Egypt. Cyrus not only excelled in his medical practice but also dedicated himself to serving the sick and providing care and comfort to those in need. Through his compassionate nature and Christian example, he brought numerous individuals closer to the faith, inspiring many to embrace Christianity. Alongside his medical practice, Saint Cyrus actively participated in spreading the teachings of Christ, becoming an influential figure within the Christian community. His commitment to his faith and his unwavering dedication to helping others made him a beloved figure among the Christians of his time. Unfortunately, the unwavering faith of Saint Cyrus led to opposition and persecution. He, along with Saint John and Saint Athanasia, devout Christians who shared his commitment to the faith, faced severe torture and martyrdom for their unwavering belief in Christ. These tragic events were chronicled by Saint Sophronius and other witnesses, ensuring that the stories of these martyrs were preserved for future generations. The narrative of their martyrdom serves as a testament to their steadfastness and unwavering faith, inspiring countless believers throughout history. After his martyrdom, Saint Cyrus was buried outside Canope, Egypt. However, his relics were later taken to the Basilica of Saint Mark in Alexandria by Saint Cyril of Alexandria. This translation of his relics was part of Saint Cyril's campaign against the cult of Isis in the region. Subsequently, the relics were translated again, this time to Manutha, Egypt. Eventually, the relics found their final resting place in the Saint Appassara church in Rome, Italy. Recognizing his remarkable life and the devotion he inspired, Saint Cyrus The Physician was canonized as a saint in the Pre-Congregation period. He is venerated as the patron saint of Portici, Italy, a testament to the impact he made during his time in Alexandria and beyond. The story of Saint Cyrus The Physician resonates with individuals seeking guidance and inspiration in their own lives. His dedication to serving the sick, his steadfast faith, and his ultimate sacrifice are a source of inspiration for those facing challenges and persecution for their beliefs. Saint Cyrus's legacy continues to shine through the ages, reminding us all of the power of compassion, faith, and selfless service.
