St. Onofrio of Panaia

Saint Onofrio of Panaia, also known as Onofrio Catanzaro, Onofrio the Hermit, or Onofre, was a revered Catholic saint who lived a life dedicated to prayer, solitude, and spiritual discipline. He is particularly venerated in Calabria, Italy, where he spent most of his life as a hermit in the forests of Panaia. Onofrio was born in the town of Catanzaro in Calabria, around the end of the 10th century. From a young age, he exhibited a deep interest in spirituality and a strong desire to follow a life of holiness. As a young man, he was drawn to the principles of the Basilian Rule, which emphasized a monastic way of life based on the teachings of Saint Basil the Great. Yearning for a life of solitude, Onofrio left his family and possessions behind and retreated to the dense forests of Panaia, located in the southern part of Calabria. There, he established himself as a hermit and dedicated his days to prayer, meditation, and self-mortification. Despite the harsh conditions and rigorous ascetic practices he undertook, Onofrio's piety and wisdom attracted a considerable number of followers who sought his spiritual guidance. During his time in solitude, Onofrio lived a life of extreme simplicity. He sustained himself by foraging for food in the wilderness and relied on the providence of God for his daily needs. His unwavering devotion to prayer and the strict observance of his monastic vows made him a symbol of holiness and a shining example of the eremitic tradition. Saint Onofrio of Panaia lived an exceptionally long life, and he is believed to have passed away in the year 995 due to natural causes.
