Increase Our Faith
Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M., Administrator
Though it took some outside help, I was able to establish an internet connection in one of the work rooms of the Poor Clare Monastery where I am offering an eight-day retreat.
Today's Gospel is one of those instances when it seems as if Jesus is predicting the future. However, if we remember that the Gospels were written very late in the apostolic era, the evangelists are more often than not simply recording what has already happened. Difficulties in communal living, some scandal, and sin have been part of the Christian experience from the very beginning. The Church of the 20th and 21st centuries is not the only community to experience this.
"Increase our faith." This is the response of the apostles as they listen to Jesus. Indeed, it is faith that keeps us connected to both God and our brothers and sisters. The Scriptures understand faith as fidelity, faithfulness, cohesion with and connection to the community. The prayer for faith is well uttered. Many have had their faith shaken because of the sins of the clergy as well as the sins of our culture and society. With the apostles, we pray for an increase in our faith.
