St. Pere Sans Jordà
May 26
Saint Pere Sans Jordà, also known as Pedro Sanz or Peter Sanz, was born on 3 September 1680 in Ascó, Tarragona, Spain. He displayed great piety and a strong desire to serve God from a young age. In pursuit of his calling, he joined the Dominican Order in 1697. After years of diligent study and preparation, Pere Sans Jordà was ordained as a priest on 24 September 1704. He quickly proved himself to be a zealous and dedicated servant of the Church. In 1712, he was assigned as a missionary to the Philippines, where he tirelessly spread the teachings of Christ and ministered to the local population. Pere Sans Jordà's missionary journey did not end in the Philippines. In 1713, he was sent to China, a country with its own unique challenges and cultural context. Undeterred by the obstacles that lay before him, he embraced his new mission with unwavering faith and determination. On 29 January 1728, Pere Sans Jordà was appointed as the co-adjutor vicar apostolic of Fo-Kien, China. His duties involved assisting the bishop in the administration of the diocese and spreading the Gospel among the Chinese people. His exceptional leadership qualities and commitment to his mission were further recognized when he was consecrated as the bishop co-adjutor and titular bishop of Mauricastro on 24 February 1730. The following year, on 3 January 1732, Pere Sans Jordà was appointed as the vicar apostolic of Fujian. This significant role entrusted him with the responsibility of shepherding the faithful in this region and overseeing their spiritual well-being. He wholeheartedly embraced his new assignment, working tirelessly to foster a deepening of faith and guiding the growth of the Church in Fujian. As an effective and dedicated bishop, Pere Sans Jordà faced numerous challenges in China, including widespread persecution and hostility towards Christians. However, his unwavering faith and deep love for Christ and the Church allowed him to endure these trials with incredible strength and resilience. Tragically, Pere Sans Jordà's commitment to his faith and his tireless efforts to spread the Gospel led to his imprisonment in 1746. Despite enduring harsh conditions and suffering, he remained steadfast in his faith until the end. On 26 May 1747, he was ultimately beheaded in Fuzhou, Fujian, China, becoming one of the Martyrs of China. The powerful witness of Pere Sans Jordà's martyrdom and his unwavering commitment to Christ's mission attracted great veneration among the faithful. On 6 January 1893, Pope Leo XIII recognized his martyrdom with a decree, officially declaring him venerable. Only a few months later, on 14 May 1893, Pope Leo XIII beatified him. Ultimately, the heroic virtue and impressive spiritual legacy of Saint Pere Sans Jordà were further acknowledged when he was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000. This saintly martyr serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, particularly to those engaged in missionary work, reminding us of the uncompromising faith and dedication to Christ that can lead to great sacrifice and ultimately, sainthood. Although he has not been officially designated as a patron saint, Saint Pere Sans Jordà's intercession can be sought for the challenges faced by missionaries and those working to advance the Gospel in difficult circumstances.
