St. Ubaldesca Taccini

May 28

Saint Ubaldesca Taccini, also known simply as Ubaldesca, was an Italian nun who dedicated her life to the care of the poor and the sick. Born in Calcinaia, Pisa, Italy in 1136, she was the only child of a poor but pious family. From a young age, Ubaldesca felt a deep calling to religious life and to serve those less fortunate than herself. At the age of 15, Ubaldesca joined the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, which was a religious order dedicated to the care of the sick and the defense of the Christian faith. She embraced the life of a nun wholeheartedly, living in the order for 55 years. One of the notable aspects of Saint Ubaldesca's life was her gift of miraculous healing. Many people who came into contact with her reported being cured of ailments and illnesses. Her ability to heal was seen as a sign of her holiness and connection with God. This extraordinary gift brought hope and comfort to many in need. Ubaldesca remained devoted to her religious calling throughout her life and was known for her deep prayer life and ascetic practices. She lived a life of simplicity, dedicating herself to acts of charity and service. Her love and concern for the poor were unmatched, and she worked tirelessly to alleviate their suffering. Saint Ubaldesca Taccini passed away on the feast of the Holy Trinity, May 28, 1206, in Pisa, Italy. Miraculous healings were reported at her tomb, further bolstering her reputation as a holy woman. As a testament to her sanctity, some of her relics were later translated to Malta on June 30, 1587. Pope Sixtus V granted a plenary indulgence to those who visit Saint Ubaldesca's relics in Malta on May 28, her feast day. This recognition by the Pope highlights the impact and spiritual significance of her life and ministry. Saint Ubaldesca Taccini is admired and venerated as a model of selflessness, devotion, and miraculous healing. Although she does not have any specific patronages assigned to her, she continues to inspire and intercede for those who seek her help. May we all be inspired by Saint Ubaldesca's selfless dedication to the poor, her faithfulness to her religious calling, and her extraordinary gift of healing.
